If you’ve followed me for a while you will know my style,
I’m all about simple natural baby led posing on simple, un-fussy backdrops.
If you’ve followed me from the beginning you will know that this wasn’t always the case.
When I first started my photography journey back in 2011 the newborn genre was still fairly new to the UK, there were very few specialised newborn photographers over here so we took our influence from the states. It was all about colour, props and perfect posing and it was normal for a session to take around 4 hours to complete and include elaborate set ups and poses dubbed the “froggy”.
I spent years collecting a vast array of fabrics, props, headbands, knits, wraps….the list goes on….and on. It came to a point towards the end of 2014 where I was just overwhelmed by the amount of ‘stuff!’ that I had collected and I became increasingly flustered with my workflow.
I remember a particular moment where I was mid session and had this gorgeous baby boy posed in the perfect position on a grey blanket on my posing beanbag, I just needed a coordinating wrap to finish it all off, Catherine (my assistant) handed me about 10 different wraps that just didn’t work with the blanket baby was laying on. It was then that I realised that the props needed to go, the baby was perfect WITH or WITHOUT a matching grey wrap.
All babies are perfect as they are, they don’t need to be put in a bucket to look cute, they don’t need ANYTHING at all.
And there it was, I had ditched the props and re-discovered exactly why I wanted to photograph newborns in the first place, it was to document not only what your baby looked like when they were brand new, those tiny perfect fingers and toes, but also what it felt like to hold them in your arms, that overwhelming feeling of love and the joy you feel when you watch them stretch, yawn and sneeze, it’s all unbelievably adorable.
Real love, real moments.
Baby led posing is my true love, I typically start with a simple swaddle wrap then let your baby take the lead by showing me the positions he/she most loves to be in then I document every little detail for you incorporating Mama, Daddy and older siblings wherever I can because I’m a total sucker for the connection between families, I just love it.
My fave shots are always the natural ones, looking down at your loves, soaking in each moment.
It’s these feelings that I want you to have when you look back at your photographs.
